DATAFORT Managed Backup Services
Select+ Case studies

Case Study 1: An international entertainment organisation with over 50 UK venues
The challenge
The company needed backup at each of its 50+ sites. An absence of technical staff at the venues made local backup impossible. It was nevertheless critical that the integrity of data be maintained, as loss would mean that the venue would not be able to function. Staff email accounts were particularly vulnerable.
The solution
Select Plus accounts were created for each venue. The onsite appliance allows DataFort engineers easy access to the system, meaning that non-technical employees do not have to be concerned with their data security system. Backup happens entirely in the background.
The outcome
The onsite appliance enables the client to retrieve ticket sales information instantaneously in the event of a fault in the primary data system. Because of the amount of data to be backed up, the trickle functionality became critical to getting data offsite as scheduled.

Case Study 2: Charity with a small number of employees
The challenge
The charity had started with a DataFort Select account 5 years ago. During that time their stored data had soared from just a few Gb to over 200Gb, being significantly more than can be quickly recovered over the internet.  The board of the charity demanded a high degree of data security and the company knew they lacked the wherewithal to provide it internally.
The solution
The charity had a primary office and two smaller offices. They ordered Select + to cope with the additional data load.
The outcome
With DataFort Select + in place, the charity’s board can now be confident that data is totally secure and instantly recoverable in the event of accidental loss or disaster. We were also able to link all three of the client’s accounts for efficient billing.

Case Study 3: International hedge fund with offices in London, Zurich and Frankfurt
The challenge

To comply with UK legal requirements, FSA regulations demand that the client takes all steps to facilitate business continuity in the event of a system failure or other problems. Requirement was for data backup alone, as email systems are hosted remotely in Germany. The need included all other data associated with the UK based business, including records of UK customers and trades.
The solution
With around 200Gb of data to protect, the client purchased DataFort Select + as the perfect solution. Internet backup traffic is controlled within the appliance, so the backups can take place during the day without impacting on employee use.
The outcome
Recoveries are taken directly from the appliance, backed up with daily email reports. The directors now have the peace of mind of knowing that, should the need arise, offsite copies of all data can be used as a resource for disaster recovery.

Case Study 4: IT Support company with large customers dissatisfied with tape backup
The challenge

An IT support company with an existing customer base wished to migrate away from supporting a tape backup strategy for its customers. It had proved awkward to manage and, at times, ineffectual. They were looking for an automated solution that could be realistically used for backing up data as well as the exchange server. They did not want to get involved with extensive hardware purchase, nor did they have the resources to manage servers in a data centre.
The solution
Since the company had scripts and systems in place to backup their customers’ data, albeit to tape, Select Plus was the perfect solution. Rather than pointing the backups exclusively to tape, data was backed up to tape together with the backup appliance. Once the channel partner was satisfied that the solution would work for their customers, they migrated entirely to Select Plus. DataFort worked alongside the channel partner company to assist a problem-free transition.
